
What is DTwiSE?
DTwiSE, the International Workshop on Digital Twin Software Engineering, is a scientific venue dedicated to the software engineering aspects of digital twins.
Digital Twins (DTs) are virtual representations of physical systems that collect continuous data and provide insights and automated actions on the corresponding physical assets. DTs extend traditional cyber-physical software with capabilities that challenge the engineering of DT software. Notable examples of such capabilities include high-pace data ingestion, real-time modeling&simulation, the incorporation of AI, and various prediction, optimization, and monitoring capabilities. These capabilities directly affect how we engineer software for DT along the overall software engineering lifecycle. Thanks to the rapid growth of DT applications in domains such as manufacturing, robotics, smart grids, and healthcare, modeling&simulation and data-related aspects of DTs are relatively well-researched. However, the software engineering foundations of DTs remain fragmented: there is limited agreement on how to specify DT requirements, architect DT platforms, manage DT evolution, assure AI-enabled DT components, or operate DTs through deployment pipelines.
Co-located with ICSE, the flagship conference of software engineering, DTwiSE intends to bring together software engineers, domain experts, modeling and simulation researchers, and practitioners. The workshop will feature a keynote and peer-reviewed paper presentations with discussions. A closing interactive panel discussion will distill priority research questions, candidate artifacts, and collaboration opportunities into a concrete research agenda for DT software engineering.
